HBO Borrows Liberace’s Bejeweled Concert Grand for Movie Promotion

Liberace’s famous bejeweled concert piano is being featured in New York City at the Time Warner Center by HBO as a promotion for the opening of the movie “Behind the Candelabra” starring Michael Douglas, Matt Damon and Rob Lowe from May 19th thru the 27th. Not in New York? It’ll be back at Piano Mill again in June, so come visit and bring your best feathered cape.

On Wednesday, February 13th Piano Mill’s Amanda Carr (Director) was accompanied by Chris Taylor on a brand new Baldwin BP190 grand piano purchased from Piano Mill as the Mill Pond branch has become the Emilson YMCA and Laura’s Center for the Arts in honor of Herb and Paulie Emilson and their late daughter Laura Riekert. The Emilsons are longtime supporters of the South Shore YMCA’s mission to strengthen our communities through programs and services that help build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. In recognition of the Emilson family’s commitment to ensuring that each child, family and individual has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive we are proud to dedicate the Emilson YMCA and Laura’s Center for the Arts in their honor. After researching carefully, Herb Emilson visited Piano Mill and chose just the right instrument for the new center. Piano Mill owner Rob Norris has partnered with the YMCA to sponsor youth based music programs and provide discount and low cost pianos for deserving families.

Kawai CN-24 Takes Center Stage for “Stars Over Boston”

Piano Mill proudly sponsored “Stars Over Boston” and provided a digital Kawai Model CN-24 for the contest performances at the Stanford Calderwood Pavillion in Boston. The piano filled the theater with the sounds of a grand piano and ensemble strings, providing a winning combination for Nola Hood who was accompanied by her cousin and sang her way into the winner’s circle. Hammer Art Exhibit kicks off weekend of October 20th

Long time Rockland resident and artist, Dorothy Hammer, is being featured on the walls of Piano Mill beginning the weekend of October 20th and 21st. The 89-year young Dorothy is self-taught, but has also taught others over the years in a variety of different subjects. Known to many has “Hammerhead”, Dorothy has embraced this designation from many of her former driver’s educations students, a class she taught for 25 years in partnership with Rockland Public Schools. Her artwork reflects the same spirit and diversity as her life and the collection boasts dozens of pieces created over the past 6 decades. Dorothy will be on- hand during the kick-off weekend to represent her work and speak with attendees, offering for sale many paintings and reserving other pieces for ‘the right buyer’. Piano Mill is delighted to share both Dorothy and her paintings with the community. The collection can be viewed during regular retail business hours.

PIANO MILL EXTENDS RETAIL HOURS

With “back-to-school” piano purchases and music lessons making for a busy time here at Piano Mill, we’ve decided to extend our retail hours to respond to the multiple requests for us to stay open later. So, we have extended our retail hours Monday thru Friday to 7pm. Weekend hours will remain the same and, as always, we will be open 7-days a week and accommodate by appointment anyone who can’t make our regular posted hours.

Piano Mill prepares for Tax-Free Weekend

Tax-free weekend returns to Massachusetts Aug. 11-12, 2012. During the two-day period, all purchases made in the Commonwealth totaling less than $2,500 will not be subject to state tax, which could mean significant savings when buying you or your piano-student child a piano.

“I think Massachusetts got it right to make the Tax-Free Weekend in mid August when so many families need to purchase school supplies, clothes and even furnish college dorm rooms… we just hope that anyone thinking about getting a piano will realize there’s a lot to choose from that is eligible for tax-free status.” All single, tangible items costing less than $2,500 and purchased for personal use are eligible under the tax-free promotion. So Piano Mill has reduced the price of dozens of pianos to be included in this special, limited opportunity. Piano Mill technicians have been working vigorously to prepare some recently acquired used pianos to be in showroom condition and ready to deliver to a new home in time for the Saturday-Sunday rush.
Rob Norris is optimistic that having a solid selection of pianos under $2,500 and heavily discounting some new pianos will draw a lot of interest and get people to visit the Rockland, MA location. With a generous trade-in and trade-up policy, these ‘starter’ pianos are the perfect way to get young piano students on the right track right away.

“Kids, Keys and Melodies” program off to a great start….

From drumsticks to piano keys, dancing to singing in unison and harmony, this young group of future musicians are both enthralled and excited with the exuberant and talented Kim Engle as she shakes, sings, strums and hums along with the group. Before children may be old enough for private lessons, it’s important to have them get acquainted with different instruments, rhythm, how to listen, sing and all facets of music. “Kids, Keys and Melodies” is a program created by Piano Mill and geared to children 3-6 years of age to help integrate musical concepts into their learning diet. Within a short period of time, these children gravitate toward an instrument and usually continue on to take dedicated lessons. Piano Mill feels that it’s important to offer these group classes and are thrilled to have Kim be at the helm for this 6-week summer program.
